Rebuilding New Orleans Post-Hurricane Katrina: A Look at How Race and Class Intersect in Our Nation
Over one year ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated much of the Gulf Coast , including New Orleans , Louisiana . The Category 5 hurricane caused the levees in New Orleans to break, flooding the city and turning it into what has been called a “toxic soup” filled with disease-ridden water. The water was pumped out of the city within weeks of the hurricane, yet the aftermath of the storm is continuing to present problems for the city of New Orle ans and its inhabitants. Now, the issue of race is unfortunately contributing to plans for rebuilding New Orleans .
